From Green's very first description of Hazel it is obvious that she is unlike any other. Hazel carries herself in a different manor then any other girl her age. Not only is Hazel big hearted and wise beyond her years, but also strong willed and determined. Hazel’s determination is exemplified when she goes to great lengths to figure out the ending of the novel that has been driving her mad, An imperial affliction. Hazel's medical conditions don't stop her from traveling to another country and tracking down the author to put and end to her countless questions. Hazels medical conditions didn't stop her impeccable determination to find the missing puzzle pieces she was looking for. Not only is Hazel characterized as determined, but also loving and big hearted. Hazel secludes heself in order to save them from heart ache. “I'm a grenade and at some point I'm going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okay?” (Green 99). Hazel isolates herself from others because she doesn’t want anyone to hurt over her future death. She remains the consistent until she begins to fall for Augustus Waters and then she goes through a slight character metamorphous. Once meeting Augustus, Hazel finally can relate to someone and occasionally feel care free and like a “normal” teenager for the first time in her life. Hazel soon realizes that she is the one who has fallen for the grenade but doesn’t let that discontinue her big heart for Augustus. Hazel’s strong will and big heart make her out to be sensible beyond her years and unlike any other. Hazel does not let her cancer define who she is and she remains a loving determined individual.
