Want to hear John Green answer some of the questions you were thinking about? Click below! Isaac is a standup guy, a true believer of love and a faithful friend. When he loses his eyesight to cancer, his girlfriend Monica breaks up with him. Isaac is devastated and cannot get over the breakup. Well, I believe in true love," Isaac said. "And I love her. And she promised. She promised me always”(Green). This quote shows how much Monica meant to Isaac and how Isaac thought their relationship would last forever. This breakup between Isaac and Monica also leads to Isaac being angry because he wishes that Monica cared as much as he did about the breakup. Isaac reminds the reader that cancer isn’t just detrimental, it’s also very frustrating when cancer holds you back from someone or something. The most important characteristic that Isaac shows the reader is friendship is the most important quality to him. Right until the end of Augustus, Isaac was always there for him just like Augustus was there for Isaac when he had the surgery to get his eyes removed. They really knew how to stick together through the good times and the not so good times. Not only was Isaac a friend to Augustus but also Hazel especially when she is looking for a friend after the death of Augustus. Isaac is a friendly reminder of what true friendship is really about.
Character analysis on Augustus Waters... When first introduced to Augustus Waters, he is witty, romantic and especially charming. He seems like the total package to any girl but he is more than just eye candy. Augustus has a deep profound side of him that Hazel is introduced to when she first meets him. When Hazel is discussed by the cigarette placed in his mouth he calmly replies “It's a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing” (Green). Augustus uses these cigarettes in his time of insecurity or uncertainty like when he is flying on the plane to Amsterdam. Augustus doesn’t look at the world like an average teenage boy, he carefully analyzes his life in the most philosophical way he can. When the cancer of Augustus is reawaken his strength starts to chip away and his mind begins to dwindle into negative thoughts. Augustus looks at his cancer as an obstacle from him leaving an impact on the world. When Augustus is forced to accept his death he slowly starts to shatter piece by piece. Although Augustus’ wish of leaving an impact on the world didn’t come true he left an impact on Hazel’s world after his death. Unknowingly, he left and impact on Hazel Grace that was enough to change her whole world. He was the grenade that changed her life.

From Green's very first description of Hazel it is obvious that she is unlike any other. Hazel carries herself in a different manor then any other girl her age. Not only is Hazel big hearted and wise beyond her years, but also strong willed and determined. Hazel’s determination is exemplified when she goes to great lengths to figure out the ending of the novel that has been driving her mad, An imperial affliction. Hazel's medical conditions don't stop her from traveling to another country and tracking down the author to put and end to her countless questions. Hazels medical conditions didn't stop her impeccable determination to find the missing puzzle pieces she was looking for. Not only is Hazel characterized as determined, but also loving and big hearted. Hazel secludes heself in order to save them from heart ache. “I'm a grenade and at some point I'm going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okay?” (Green 99). Hazel isolates herself from others because she doesn’t want anyone to hurt over her future death. She remains the consistent until she begins to fall for Augustus Waters and then she goes through a slight character metamorphous. Once meeting Augustus, Hazel finally can relate to someone and occasionally feel care free and like a “normal” teenager for the first time in her life. Hazel soon realizes that she is the one who has fallen for the grenade but doesn’t let that discontinue her big heart for Augustus. Hazel’s strong will and big heart make her out to be sensible beyond her years and unlike any other. Hazel does not let her cancer define who she is and she remains a loving determined individual.
